Principen is an antibiotic that works against bacterial infections. It's generic name is ampicillin trihydrate. It is a penicillin type of antibiotic. It arrests the growth of bacteria in the body.
Uses of Principen
Principen is principally used as a treatment against many gram- positive and gram- negative bacteria. It is a very potent drug against bacterial infections, but it does not work against viral infections like flu, common cold, etc.
One thing you must keep in mind is that if you use it unnecessarily, the effectiveness will decrease gradually.
This medication is generally taken four times a day, on an empty stomach. Or take it as advised by your doctor.
Side- Effects of Principen
Every drug has some side- effects attached to it. Principen is not an exception. It also has some side- effects. These side- effects are not so severe and resolve on their own, but if they persist for a longer duration of time or worsen with time, you must consult your doctor. The common side- effects of Principen are:
- Tongue or mouth sores
There are some rare side- effects attached to Principen. They are:
- Allergic reactions occurring as rashes, swelling on face, throat, lips or tongue, difficulty in breathing, itching and dizziness.
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Yellow skin or eyes
- Dark urine
- Persistent diarrhea
- Persistent vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Sore throat
- Vaginal yeast infection causing vaginal discharge
- Oral yeast infection that may cause oral thrush
A very rare but, very serious side- effect caused by this medication is Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea, a very severe intestinal condition. This occurs due a kind of resistant bacteria. It may occur during the course of treatment or after that. One thing you must keep in mind is not to take any anti- diarrhea medication or narcotic pain medicine to counter these symptoms as this may worsen the condition.
Contraindications of Principen
You must not take Principen if you are allergic to ampicillin or any other ingredient of Principen. If allergic reaction manifests, rush to the doctor immediately.
Pregnancy and Principen
Doctors advice to use ampicillin during pregnancy only when is strictly needed. Otherwise you must avoid using this medication during pregnancy. There is no known negative effect of ampicillin on the unborn baby, but to avoid any risk, you must tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnancy during the course of taking ampicillin.
Ampicillin may also pass into the breast milk and hence, you must not take this drug if you are a nursing mother, as it may lead to various negative effects in the nursing baby.
